The name is an evolution of an ancient Baltic female name Medeina (meh-DAY-nah). Medeina was the name of the Baltic goddess of forests and hunting, derived from the element mede meaning “sapling” Medeina was somewhat akin to the Greek and Roman goddess Diana.
