From the transferred use of a Marian devotional name, Ainhoa is the name of a Basque town on the French side of the Basque Country. When wars and border closures prevented local pilgrims from visiting the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu in Gipuzkoa, a chapel dedicated to the same Marian devotion was established in Ainhoa. According to the original Arantzazu legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd in a hawthorn bush; a later local tradition places a similar apparition near Ainhoa.

The origin of the town’s name is uncertain, but Brigitte Jobbé-Duval has suggested that it may be derived from the Basque word aino, meaning “goat.”

Ainhoa became extremely popular in Spain in the early 2000s. It peaked at #15 in 2003 and currently ranks as the 83rd most popular female name in Spain (2024). In the Basque Country alone, it ranks among the Top 100 Most Popular Female Names, coming in at #94 (2024).

Its 2003 peak may have been bolstered by Spanish singer Ainhoa Cantalapiedra, who won the widely watched second season of Operación Triunfo in January of that year. Other notable bearers include Basque operatic soprano Ainhoa Arteta and Ainhoa Montero, a character played by Blanca Suárez in the popular Spanish television series El barco (2011–2013).

The name’s usage has since spread throughout the Spanish-speaking world. It currently ranks as the 960th most popular female name in the United States (2025). It is especially popular in Puerto Rico, where it ranks among the Top 100 Female Names at #35 (2025).

Ainhoa has also experienced minor but less prevalent use in France.
