  • Origin: Icelandic
  • Meaning: “shore; beach; low tide; ebb.”
  • Gender: Female
  • Pron: (FYAH-rah)

From the Icelandic vocabulary word fjara, meaning “foreshore” or “the stretch of shoreline exposed at low tide.” It is a modern feminine given name and was officially accepted into Iceland’s Personal Names Register on January 13, 2022.

The word is also familiar as the title of “Fjara,” a song by the Icelandic post-metal band Sólstafir. It appeared on the band’s 2011 album Svartir Sandar, and its music video was released in 2012. The song’s popularity may have helped introduce Fjara to a wider audience, although there is no evidence that it directly prompted the name’s official acceptance.
