Blane/Blaine is the English form of the Old Irish male name Bláán, which is speculated to be derived from bláa (meaning “yellow; blonde”); however, other sources believe it may be a British name of uncertain meaning.

It was borne by a 6th-century Scottish saint who was born on the Isle of Bute and was the nephew of St. Cathan. He later became a monk and a bishop among the Picts, and allegedly gave his name to the town of Dunblane in Scotland (“fort of Blane”). His designated name-day and feast day is August 10th.

Blaine also appears as a Scottish surname, usually denoting someone descended from a man Bláán.
