Of uncertain origin or meaning, the name may be a Danish form of Miles, the Slavic Miloš (love, dear) or be related to the Greek name Mylasos (unknown meaning), which is also the name of an ancient city in Turkey, now known as Milas. The latter may have a Lycian or Hittite etymology.

It is currently the 41st Most Popular Male Name in Denmark (2018).

It last appeared in the U.S. Top 1000 in 1883, when it came in at # 720.
