The name is a Croatian form of the Late Latin male name, Domnius, meaning, “lord.”

The name was borne by a 4th-century Croatian saint. It is believed that he was originally from Syria, but ended up in what is now Croatia after being made Bishop of Dalmatia. He was martyred by Diocletian.
