The name is derived from the Old Estonian male name Lembitu meaning “beloved.” The name was borne by a 13th-century Estonian hero, Lembitu of Lehola (d.1217). He noted for his fight against the German Livonian Brothers of the Sword who were conquering Estonia for Germany’s usage. It is currently borne by Lembit Öpik (b.1965), an Estonian-British Member of Parliament for the constituency of Montgomeryshire in Wales and was the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats between 2001-2007.
