(HAHM-poos)

He is quirky, sophisticated and latinate in feel, though in reality he is a traditional Swedish name that has suddenly skyrocketed up the Swedish popularity charts. The etymology of Hampus is Germanic, derived from the Old High German Heimbrecht which is either composed of the elements heim meaning “home; house” and brecht meaning “bright; illustrious; or shining.” It spun off the diminiutive form of Hampe which in turn spun off the latinized Swedish version of Hampus. In 2008, Hampus was the 50th most popular male name in Sweden. Its designated name day in Sweden is August 29th.
