The name is a feminine form of Bohuslav which is derived from the old Slavonic elements bog meaning “god” and slava meaning “glory.” In the Czech Republic, its designated name day is July 7. The Polish forms are the popular Bogusław and the feminine Bogusława (boh-goo-SWAHF); (bo-goo-SWAH-vah).

Bohuslav was borne by famous Czech Composer Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959). It was also borne by Polish magnate Bogusław Radziwiłł (1620-1669).
