The name is believed to be derived from a Turkic source, possibly kupan meaning “rebel.” The name was borne by a Hungarian nobleman of the 10th-century, one scholar, Arminius Vambery, believed that Koppány was a nickname (rebel) he earned and not his actual name, which has been lost to history. Koppány was a pagan who fought with his brother, István, a Christian, over the Arpád throne. Koppány was eventually defeated and his defeat represented the death of ancient Hungarian religion. The designated name-day is October 7.
