Kalju

Gender: Masculine
Origin: Estonian
Meaning: “rock; boulder.”
(KAHL-yoo)

An ancient Estonian male name, this is probably one of Estonia’s quintessential male names, as classically Estonian as it gets. It comes directly from the Estonian word for a rock or boulder. Another form is Kaljo. Its name day is August 3rd.

  1. Hmm, reminds me of the French Caillou [KYE-yu; "pebble"]. Maybe an alternative for those not wanting the cartoon/book association?

  2. Now that you bring it up, I would've never thought of Caillou. Caillou is also used to describe a blood clot in French. Another bad association.
