In Greek mythology, the name was borne by a nymph who was cursed by Hera with an uncontrollable tongue, that is, an echo.

The nymph later fell in love with Narcissus, who did not love her back, and in grief, Echo pined away, until there was nothing left of her but her voice.

In ancient Greek art, she was often depicted as winged woman with her face covered in a veil.
