The name was first used by the medieval Italian poet, Bocaccio, in his Decameron and his Elegy of Lady Fiammetta. It is believed that Fiammetta was actually a pseudonym for Boccacio’s real life crush, Maria D’Aquino.

The name may have started off as a nickname for someone who was an eloquent speaker, but has been a very common given name since the Middle Ages, especially in the regions of Northern Italy, in particular, Tuscany. Another form of this name is Fiamma, which means “flame.”
